Points of Articulation: Matty Collector Thundercats 2016 Subscription

Lion-O

At 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, Mattel previewed the first two figures of their upcoming Thundercats line to much excitement. The figures are based off the popular 1980s cartoon of the same name that ran from 1985-1989. For any child growing up in the 80s, Thundercats was up there with the top cartoons and brands of the decade such as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, GI Joe, Transformers, Robotech, Voltron, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — and that’s just skimming the surface of how rad the 80s were! As a matter of fact, looking back, the 1980s were the pinnacle of awesomeness.

Enter 2016, and the 80s have never been more alive. Leading the way in said revival have been Mattel and Hasbro — Hasbro in a more mainstream fashion, and Mattel with their newly revised “Club Grayskull” monthly subscription that has been going strong, albeit not without a few bumps along the way, since 2008.

I have only subscribed to Matty Collector once, and that was for their Voltron line from a few years back. I loved the figures, but the overall quality was, in my opinion, not worth the high price of each piece. Though I’ve never subscribed to the Masters of the Universe Club, I do have a handful of the figures, and I can say that the overall quality of those toys are outstanding. Sculpted by Four Horsemen Studios, the Masters of the Universe line is still thriving after eight years.

Also designed by Four Horsemen Studios, the Thundercats line will ship its first figure in September of this year. That figure is none other than the leader of the Thundercats, Lion-O. Three more figures will follow: Jacklman in October, Pumyra in November and Panthro in December. If you subscribe to Club Third Earth, you’ll also receive the exclusive Mumm-Ra figure in November. This figure is ONLY available with the monthly subscription, which is available until February 26th. Each figure is $25 plus tax and shipping. The shipping in my opinion is a complete rip off, but there really is no other way to get these figures. You can opt to bundle the figures together to save on the shipping costs, but you’ll have to wait longer for each one. Why Matty’s shipping rates are so high is anyone’s guess, but it is a necessary evil.

Jacklman Pumyra Panthro Mumm-Ra

If you are a Thundercats fan I highly recommend subscribing to Club Third Earth. If  the He-Man line has been any indicator, a good amount of these figures have been EXTREMELY difficult to acquire the day(s) they go up for sale. Often figures sell out very quickly. By subscribing you ensure that you will own each and every one. As for any you may not particularly want, you can always re-sell or trade it online. However, please don’t be that person and charge some ridiculous amount. Make some money, but be fair, we’re all in this together.

As for me, I placed my order today. Growing up, Thundercats was always a toy line I wanted but for some reason never collected. Now I have the chance to join the Thundercats in their fight against Mumm-Ra and the Mutants of Plunn-Darr. Thundercats Hoooooooo!
